[TOKYO] NanXiang Xiao Long Bao

NanXiang Xiao Long Bao in Roppongi Hills Tokyo 4

Dear Food Diary:
On my first Sunday in Tokyo, StalkerBoy and I decided to check out Jesus Lifehouse Church at Roppongi Hills. After service, as we were searching for food, I saw NanXiang Xiao Long Bao and the urge to chow down Shanghai’s signature pockets of soupy goodness came upon me.

I know I should be getting my fix of Japanese food, but this is home and comfort to me. I gave in.

Roppongi Hills
Posh Roppongi Hills. Art, food and shopping all things I adore.

They looked ok though 6 came to about $18!!! What? Seriously? Serves me right for coming here! But most importantly, how did they taste?

The flavors were good, there was decent amount of soup after my first nibble. The skin/wrap was fine. But where was the crab roe? Tiny orange dots? were those it? Seriously?! How disappointing. A faint crab flavor in the filling. This makes me cringe as a Shanghainese gal. A bad representation of one of my favorite things to eat.

Drunken Chicken
The chicken was really tender and juicy. Chicken in Asia tend to be more flavorful for some reason. The fragrant Xiao Xin Wine permeated through the meat, like rice perfume.

NanXiang - stir fried water spinach- in Roppongi Hills Tokyo
Sauteed Water Spinach
One of StalkerBoy’s complaints about the diet here is that you don’t really see a big bowl of sauteed greens on a daily basis (at least at the places he’s been eating at). So to get our green veggies on, we had to order this. Spicy and crunchy. Pretty basic, but good. Water Spinach is one of my favorite Chinese vegetables.

NanXiang - chinese omelette with crab and bamboo shoot- in Roppongi Hills Tokyo
Chinese Omelette with Crab Meat and Bamboo Shoots
The outside is a bit crispy, specially around the edges. Deep fried real fast as a finish I assume. Soft inside with lump crab pieces and crunchy bamboo shoots. It’s savory, but there’s also hints of dark Chinese vinegar, which was really unexpected. It cuts the oily aspect and brings out the sweet flavor of the crab.

I wouldn’t say food was horrible. It wasn’t bad, but surely overpriced. Though given the location, I guess that was to be expected. Even though it reminds me of home, I won’t be returning.

After lunch we walked around Roppongi Hills.

The little pond outside had these 3 endearing kids playing and the reflection of the city. A moment away from the hustle and bustle of this city. Enjoying a sunny day.

Because it was Sunday, a lot of small local places were closed. Here were some cool architecture we saw on our way to the subway station.

You don’t taste the hormone injections in the chickens in Asia as you do in America. 😉

    • they are def smaller! I actually love chicken in Asia, but when I’m back in the States, I only like it fried or roasted… and no chicken breast… that’s a rule =) looking fwd to trying chicken sashimi!
