[MYSTIC] Connecticut: A day by the Seaport

Mystic Seaport 7

Dear Food Diary:
If you still don’t have plans for this weekend, don’t worry, Mystic, Connecticut is less than a 3 hr drive away. There’s tons of things to do in this charming little town.

Many little galleries to check out. I went Prescient Studios, art glass by Jeffrey P’an. Glass is by far one of my favorite mediums. I just love how the light reflects through these plates of color. The main road has tons of stores, anything from jewelry to antiques.

Sit by the tranquil water, check out the Museum of America and the sea or just freely walk around and smell the roses.

Explore some colonial houses, eye candy of shapes and patterns.

For something a little more active, you can rent colorful kayaks and wander around the calm waters under the sun.

When the tummy growls, I like to head over to the Sea View Snack Bar

Shack style seafood specials, deep fried… yum. Order fast food style and wait to be called. Prices though, weren’t shack like, so bring your wallet.

Sit by the water. It’s casual with a view, this is my kind of “fine” eating. I mean, Michelin Star places are great, don’t get me wrong, but on a sunny summer afternoon, you can’t beat the gentle breeze and warmth from the sun, sitting on wooden benches, t-shirt and shorts, icy cold drink. By how busy this place was, locals and visitors seemed to agree.

The Lobster Roll was decent. Chunks of sweet lobster, celery and mayo. Seasoned well sitting on top of a toasted roll. Nothing to complain about, but not the best I’ve had at this price.

I love clam strips, but these Fried Whole Belly Clams are even better. This crunchy, chewy, sweet and tender treat is not to be missed. The belly part is softer with a burst of a mushy texture, very clamy, in a good way. I actually prefer the toothsome outer ridges of the clam, but  eaten whole, its a playful texture sensation I totally enjoy. I noticed most locals just ordered this and stayed away from the rest of the menu. Next time, I’m doing the same.

The Crabcake on the other hand was less exciting. Like any bla crabcake, crab meat was a rare encounter, the filling and dough took center stage. I highly suggest skipping this, not worth it.

I got nutty flavors. Super creamy and smooth. Sit by their deck and watch the drawbridge function, while kayakers and boats sail by. Life is so much better with dessert.

I'm not exactly a "local" to Mystic (I grew up in a different part of Connecticut), but I'd have to agree — fried whole belly clams are the BEST. That's the only way my grandfather will eat them, and since I cherish that man, that's the way I prefer them. 🙂
