NYC Wine & Food Festival: Meatpacking Uncorked

Dear Food Diary:
A nice Friday night underneath High-line, in the Meatpacking with endless wine tasting, and some local eateries’ yummy bites. A little chaotic, lots of long lines, but very fun and tasty. Sipping wine from all over the world, in different hip boutiques, bars, restaurants and modern furniture stores.
There was so much wine (see map above) that I couldn’t keep track of the bad, good and exceptional, sorry wine lovers, I think at some point, I was numb, way too many choices for one night, actually roughly 2.5 hrs, but I do remember a good red and white from Portugal, and Francis Ford Coppola Winery had some great choices, I’ve visited them in Napa and loved it. Coca-Cola came in a nice red can in the shape of a bottle, which was pretty neat.
Food wise, some stood out and others remained as I suspected, riding on their name. Here are the best and the worst.

Never heard of this place, but after having their crispy pork rolls, I wonder why, maybe because as I’ve walked by in the past, I gave it a stuck up glance and quickly judged it as just another Mexican place, my bad, really… my bad. The pork was juicy and tender, great flavors and crunch, a good mix of savory, sweet and creamy. We went back for seconds, yeap, that good. Again, my bad, to make it up I will be back for dinner, I promise.

Who knew American Wagyu Beef, from Nebraska, could be so tasty, and best of all, it’s a lot less expensive than Kobe. I would totally order it for a nice dinner at home, but it seems so wrong to put such a beauty on my George Foreman, don’t you think? Here’s the guy from DeBragga showing me their prized piece of melt in you mouth goodness. I had 2 servings, thank you very much. The beef on the rare side, the way it should be, was juicy and meltingly tender, seasoned well, I can’t remember the sauce, but a piece of meat that fine didn’t need any wimpy sauce.

Murray’s

I celebrated Columbus Day early, yeap, at the Murray’s Cheese stand, they had “Columbus” Cacciatore, ok cheesy joke sorry, hahaha get it? “cheesy”? I crack myself up sometimes. The cured pork sausage that’s mild and very savory, I could of had a whole one all to myself. Best part was trying their new Cheese with Coffee, I think it was called Buzz or something, which was really yummy, light hints of java, with a slightly creamy cheese, it’s not on sale yet, but it will be soon, I can’t wait!

Now, to the not so wow… Spice Market… very dissapointing!
We waited over 20 minutes, for one of these little skewers, waiting is ok if it tastes really amazing, but the beef was really dry and very uninspiring, the only good part was the Chef, who was quite an eye candy and worked the crowd, but the skewers, come on! Is this the bestyou could put out? I don’t think was a good representation of their food, but then again, I always thought of them as overpriced, just a hype and name, this just confirmed it.

Great review! I saw the festival through the eyes of a volunteer and I think your review gives the festival a positive spin! A few of my friends attended and were overall disappointed with the lines and portions. I'm glad you were able to discover a few places that you actually want to try on your own.

Agreed, Spice Market is no good. I had dinner there, and the ambience is great but the food is very Americanized.
