53rd & 6th Halal: For dinner and lunch

Dear Food Diary:

Last night we had a girls night out. It was a Recession Proof Night. Started off at the Hottest Woman of Comedy show ($4 tix). I can’t remember any of their names, but they were very funny, except for the headliner Esther Ku (she was on Last Comic Standing), she was stinkier than blue cheese. Anyways that’s not the point of this blog, so I’m gonna leave it at that.
After the show, I was invited to Highbar rooftop lounge, so i brought the girls with me. Oh yes! “complimentary” drinks, us asians love free, but then again, who doesn’t. Anyways, so Cabana Brasilian Rum was sponsoring the night, let me tell ya’, it didn’t matter what they mixed it with, passion fruit, pineapple, strawberry, it just tasted bad. But it was a nice night so we sat outside and chit chatted. We got hungry around 11pm and I started to crave for the combo from 53rd and 6th Halal Cart (every night 8pm-4am. It’s perfect for late nights after drinking). 2 of my girlfriends never had it, what? Halal virgins? No way! we had to change that. 4 chicas walking 5 blocks and 3 avenues for this food cart, windy and starting to drizzle at 11:30pm. High heals, makeup looking for street meat, only in New York.
The line was super long as usual, but thank goodness they now operate a second cart right across the street. Same food, same taste, same bag and container. I asked one of the guys and he told me, YES it’s owned by the same people. But some people just don’t seem to believe it, and prefer to wait in line, better for us. As usual I get my Combo extra white sauce and a little bit of hot sauce (be careful with that, it’s like eating fire, even my Korean friend thought it was hot). Ok back to my combo, it’s just the right combination, the brightly colored rice, fresh simple salad, soft off the griddle pita, chicken and gyro meat (I don’t like gyro from anywhere else, I find it a bit gamey sometimes, but this one is amazingly tasty) and what makes it is their special white sauce, its just different than other carts. I don’t know what they put in it, all I know is that it’s rich, creamy and it goes perfect with all the other components of the plate. My drink of choice is Strawberry Kiwi Snapple, I like how the fruitiness evens out all the flavors in between bites.
When we got our food, it started to rain so, as ghetto as it sounds, we walked 2 blocks to one of those new bus shelters, and ate our meal. The shelter looked very clean and it was late enough that all the seats were empty, so it was like we had our own little booth, well sorta… I really had to try hard not to think about the homeless man I saw sleeping there a couple weeks ago. I rather not go into details of what I saw him doing. So anyways , back to the food. Combo great as always and portions were greater, i only managed to eat 1/3 and brought the rest to work today. 3.25 minutes in the microwave and voila, leftover lunch is served. It tasted just as good as last night and the extra white sauce came in handy. That just shows that street food is not only safe, but also proved to be safe reheated. And that’s what I call $6 well spent.
P.S. Chubby’s RATING:

I didn't like the way u have mentioned brazilian food. Have u tried another Brazilian Restaurant we have nice food. I realy don't think a rice brought all night in a plastic bag can be compared to any Brazilian food.
